Book #10- Reflections on “Highlight Real”

Highlight Real

By Emily Lynn Paulson

Casual & Serious Lies of the Modern World

This author talks openly about only sharing the highlights of her life and the casual (and serious) lies that accompany doing this. Part of the issue with the modern world is that, little by little, people drift farther away from their true selves. I, for one, stopped recognizing what “real” meant for me. The outside voices were too loud. If they said something and yet I disagreed, the internal doubt would cause me to pause. Their voices grew while my inner knowing shrank.

I didn’t recognize this at first. It happened in subtle ways. The world sees you differently than you see yourself, and it is unafraid to tell you this- but you often take it at face value. Why would it lie to you?

I think a lot of subtle lies happen through silence. Through not being honest in bad times. Through not speaking up when you want to say something because it is just not worth the trouble. These lies aren’t done with nefarious intent, just fatigue and not wanting any trouble.

It is easier to see yourself as others see you. Then you don’t have to fight any energetic current. You can just ride that river to wherever it takes you (which tends to be very far from where you want to be).
